Calculation of SFD and BMD by using MD Solids
  • SFD and BMD are most commonly used in designing Structures.
  • This can be specifically calculated by analytical methods but also to save your time, you can use This Tool.

MD Solids :-
  • It is Software mainly Designed for Mechanical and Civil students and also for the professionals to calculate Different mechanism forces and their structural sustainability.
  • Its a free tool. (For 30 Days)
  • It gives answers/calculations of each of the components within seconds.
  • There are lot of functions available in MD Solids but we will mainly focus on How to Calculate SFD and BMD using MD Solids.

Before we Start let us understand the user interface of MD Solids.

User Interface:-

'MD Solids User Interface'

Procedure to Calculate SFD and BMD is as Follows:-

  1. In the above Diagram Click on the Determinate Beams.

As soon as you click on Determinate Beams this window will open in Front of you.

     2. Select the type of Beam you want to calculate for SFD and BMD.

Three types of beams are given here:-
    • Simply Supported Beam(Can be adjusted to Overhanging beam also)
    • Cantilever Beam with Support at Left
    • Cantilever Beam with Support at Right
    3. Let us Understand all the procedure by a Problem
  • A simply supported beam of span 5m is applied with a load of 10kn at the center of Beam. Calculate shear force and Bending Moment. Draw SFD and BMD.
    • Now Click on Simply supported beam structure  as shown in Diag. 2

    • Fill the Total Beam Length as given in problem of 5m.
    • Location of Left support is always zero for simply supported beam and for right support keep it as Total Beam length value i.e. 5m. Then , Click on enter button.
    • Now you will get this Beam generated window: Here Total length is mention at the bottom of supports.
      • In this window total output is show depending on the input conditions.
      • This fig. of beam is termed as FBD(Free Body Diagram).
      • Below this fig two fig. of SFD and BMD will be generated that we will see in the upcoming procedure.
    • At the same time You will have this one window also:
      • In this fig. window you will get all the input parameters to design your beam like:
        • Upward Load
          • Downward Load
          • Upward UDL(Uniformly distributed load)
          • Downward UDL
          • Upward UVL(Uniformly Varying load)
          • Downward UVL
          • Anticlockwise moment and
          • Clockwise moment
        • Here whichever input parameter you select on the beam then the output conditions of the beam changes accordingly.
        • For our problem we will be considering Downward Load Shown by Downward arrow.

      • Specifying Load Input:
        • As soon as you click on Downward load you will get this window in front of you.
        • Here you have to give the Location of load on the beam. We have considered it as 2.5m. This location of load is considered from left support of the load only.
        • Also it will ask you for how much is the load magnitude, so you have to specify it with the value and units also. For problem we will take it as 10kn and then click on enter.
      • Final Output of SFD and BMD diagrams with SF and BM calculations.
        • Here 2nd Diagram is Shear Force Diagram (SFD) and the 3rd one is Bending Moment Diagram(BMD).
        • Calculations of SF and BM are autogenerated by this software.
